I should also mention that the book is thrilling to read. Unfortunately, the other characters in the book (his fellow crew members, the scientists at NASA on Earth) do not get much development and so they often feel one-dimensional. The majority of the plot takes place on Mars and is written in the form of Watney's journal entries. Instead, what The Martian gives us is a realistic look at an intelligent person alone on a planet and trying to survive. Watney admits at the beginning that he is in deep trouble, but he never gives up. There is a lot of humour in the story, and the reader can identify with the emotions (although no one can really imagine what it's like to be on Mars). In it he has created a realistic character. The author is Andy Weir, and this is his first published book. Watney is a botanist and engineer, and he begins to grow food and produce water in his artificial camp. It is very scientific and packed with details about survival on Mars. While this novel is fiction, in some ways it feels like non-fiction. 1) _. Alone on the red planet, he has to survive until the next mission to Mars arrives. After a terrible storm almost destroys the ship and the base, the crew of his ship believe he is dead. I love this movie, one of the best sci-fi films in years. The Martian tells the story of Mark Watney, an astronaut on the Ares 3 mission to Mars. The Martian is absolutely awesome! Ridley Scott directed this film very well, Matt Damon pulls off one of his best performances in years and if you haven't seen The Martian, you definitely need to check it out. The CGI is handled well, even though it is kind of obvious that it is CGI however the film had me invested so much that I didn't care. The scenes at Mars are breathtaking as well as kind of scary too because of what Mark Watney is going through. This film had a danger of being too sappy but they nailed the tone well!ģ. But then there are times where things go down and its very intense and heartfelt, this film manages to balance both tones very well. The jokes are well written and it helps to keep you enlightened. The tone this film is pretty funny actually. Jeff Daniels was great as well as the rest of the cast. Chiwetel Ejiofor was awesome! He is very likable and you are on his side when he tries desperately to get Mark Watney off Mars. He was entertaining, he added a lot of humanity to his character and when there are scenes where he is sad as well as going through some difficult situations, you feel it. Matt Damon was mesmerizing in this movie. The characters this film has a humongous cast so I'm going to list the stand outs, well for me anyway. The Martian was so great! I loved every minute of it! Let me explain what I loved.ġ. Ridley uses his dreamily effervescent and textured perspective to deliver a film that is great, if a tad overlong in places. Jessica Chastain is also a perfect compliment to Damon's presence, providing a cosmic yin yang chemistry. Damon doesn't seem to take the role too seriously and this is a good thing, however is performance is undeniably believable. Matt Damon's brilliant performance grounds the film throughout and is constant, committed and extremely well executed. It's a genuinely brilliant story, however. The Martian is not a comedy, but nor is it a thriller. The cheesy disco soundtrack helps fuel this slightly lighthearted feeling throughout and is also bolstered by the cameo of Kristen Wiig, mostly known for her dry and darkly comic roles and proves once again that she can lighten up the bleakest of films. Almost zany in its attempt to deliver a castaway story on Mars, its meandering tone and pace are refreshing in such a serious, heady genre and is probably the happiest film about space (are there really any happy films about space?), particularly being lost in space.
